An Overview Of Allergy From Rice Milk
Individuals allergic to milk are as susceptible towards suffering from rice milk allergies as any other normal individual; there’s no link between the two allergy types. The primary reason behind this is that rice milk does not contain any dairy product. Rice milk is a product of rice plant; this mean people, who are allergic to rice should avoid drinking rice milk.
The frequency of occurrence of rice allergy is more in nations where rice is consumed in large amounts. The most suitable example is Japan; around 10% of the natives in this country get allergic reactions from rice. Conversely, the number of native Americans diagnosed with rice allergy is quite less due to the limited use of rice in the US. Food allergy affects as much as 75% of the children, both of whose parents have food allergies. However, the kind of food from which a person will get allergic reactions might differ from his parents. Unlike most other allergy varieties, the frequency of rice allergy is more among the adults than in kids.
Rice intolerance is a condition marked by problems in digesting certain ingredients present in rice. Being intolerant towards rice does not mean that you have a rice allergy. The trigger of rice allergy on most occasions is the pollen present in rice plants. Allergic reactions from rice pollen results in signs similar to all other pollen allergies.
In majority of the cases, a patient with rice allergy will start experiencing the symptoms of rice milk allergy within 30-60 minutes of consuming the rice milk. The most common signs of the condition include: facial swelling (particularly around the eyes and mouth of the patient), hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling in the throat, wheezing, heart palpitations, lightheadedness, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea etc. If the condition turns extremely serious, the patient might also experience symptoms like change of skin color (the skin gets a bluish tinge), reduced oxygen levels etc; in this situation the patient might collapse. One unusual sign of rice allergy is anaphylaxis; to recover from this condition you must seek medical attention immediately.
An individual allergic to rice milk, must also stop having other rice products like rice flour (commonly used to make spring rolls and rice noodles). These patients might also be allergic to food items belonging to the same crop family; for instance corn, rye, wheat, barley, maize etc. Studies have shown that individuals diagnosed to have rice allergies often are also allergic to fruits like apples and peaches. Some individuals having rice allergy are allowed to consume wild rice as they don’t get any reactions from this rice variety; however, a large share of rice allergy patients are even allergic to wild rice.
