Cellulose is an organic substance that can support growth mold, mildew and bacteria. I want to clean the sponge regularly in a light bleach solution. Depending on the content of minerals in the water, you may find that it turns white and possibly growing crystals. As water is removed, minerals in water are (mostly), which leads to the accumulation of minerals. Normally this can be removed by immersion in a product like CLR or Limeaway.
