Electronic air cleaners vs. Polarized Media air cleaners
The problem, smoke getting to the people who don't appreciate a good smoke. Actually, most smokers don't like to be surrounded in smoke. It is difficult to please everyone, but with a moderate initial investment, your business will enjoy fewer customer complaints about that nasty smoking section.
Exhausting the smoke costs big bucks. You lose heated or cooled air when you open the door. Big waste in energy costs and depending on where the door is, you may be drawing that smoke into areas that you don't want smoke. Heat exchangers or energy recovery units are getting popular, but so far they aren't doing the trick either and they cost too much.
Smoke removal systems have been around for 30 years or more and keep getting more attractive and more effective. A typical electronic air cleaner is 99 percent efficient down to 0.3 microns with low energy usage and high air flow. The downside is the maintenance. Many of our customers love their electronic air cleaners for their effectiveness, but end up spending nearly every Saturday or Sunday cleaning it. If you don't keep the unit clean, it just won't work.
Now you have a choice. The Dynamic company (Engineering Dynamics Group) has developed an overhead smoke eater, the Dynamic OH1010, that has a replaceable media pad and is 97 percent efficient down to 0.3 microns. It takes about 3 minutes to change the pad and the pads last up to 4 months, depending on the amount of smoke in your tavern. The downside is that in order for the media to be effective, the airflow has to be around 750 cubic feet per minute or less. So in an area of 25 feet by 50 feet with an 8 foot ceiling you may need 2 units, where one electronic air cleaner may be enough. Is your day off worth the price of one more unit?
