What air purifier manufacturers Do not Want You to Know
Not get very far down the hall air purifier before your head starts swimming with questions about how these units compare to each other. To date, various organizations have come up with new skills to try to make it easier comparing one to another. Each of the scores seems to fall short to determine the actual capacity of the air cleaning unit.
MERV (Value Minimum Efficiency Reporting) apply at the efficiency of an air filter, while the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating applies to a purifier autonomous air. The actual information that is of concern is the amount of air is able to clean this machine and it will be clean when the machine or the filter has done its job.
No rating is missing is the fact that there is no frame of reference. If it is a MERV 10 filter is that better or worse that 9 MERV. In addition, whether it is better, it is difficult to say how much better. You have the same situation with the CADR rating. Is 4 points better than the 5 and then how better?
What it all comes down to: how much air is giving and how clean the air? To understand how to clean the air is that you know that the particles that are trying to delete. For example, pollen, dust and animal dander can be controlled with a system that is effective up to 1 micron (one micron is one millionth of a meter). You want to clean the air of secondhand smoke and bacteria, you have to find a system that is effective to 0.3 microns. A fact that communication is not always the most harmful particles are those less than 1 micron.
In order to determine the amount of clean air is being delivered (this is what the CADR number is trying to achieve), to do a little math. The formula is simple:
CFM (cubic feet of air moved per minute) x 60 (minutes per hour), and divided by 6 (for the number of air changes per hour), and divided by the height of the room (Eg, 8 feet), then calculate the square root. This will give the size of the room that the unit is capable of cleaning.
The formula looks complicated, but if you walk through it once or twice, it starts to make sense. Say you are looking for in a unit that has a 500cfm fan. You also know that the height of your ceiling is 8 feet. So multiply 500 x 60 = 30,000. Now divide by 6 air changes per hour = 5,000. Then divide by Room height of 8 feet = 625. Now find the square root = 25. The machine can clean a room size of 25 x 25 x 8 feet. This should give a rough idea of what room this unit can be put in.
It is important that you include the number of air changes per hour. Each air-cleaning device should have a capacity of 4-8 air changes per hour to ensure that all the air in the room is "scrubbed." When you can determine the amount of air for cleaning and the air is clean, you know what the air purifier manufacturers do not want you to know.
