Allergy sufferers rely on antihistamines, steroids, and other heavy duty prescription medications to cover up the symptoms. Allergies can take a toll on one’s immune system, energy levels, general well-being, and even mood. Allergies may predispose one to chronic sinusitis, daily headaches, inability to concentrate, insomnia, eye pressure, etc. Allergy sufferers are often told to avoid the allergen or undergo weekly intramuscular injections to “desensitize” them. Neither of those options is feasible for most people. Avoidance is often impossible and very few allergy sufferers want to visit the allergist for an injection once a week for several years.
Histoplasmosis is contracted when you inhale the dust that carries the fungal spores. Its effect on the body can vary widely in severity from one person to another depending upon their immune system. People can be carriers and have no symptoms at all. Others can experience flu-like symptoms and mild respiratory infections. It becomes a problem in people who already have a weakened immune system such as individuals with Asthma and Allergies.
Histoplasma capsulatum is commonly found in the in the dust and soil of the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley region. There are a lot of individuals in this area that are are carriers. It affects both men and women equally. It can also be found in other parts of the country where large amounts of pigeons gather. It gets into the soil mostly from bird and bat droppings.
We had an unusual case in Boca Raton, Fl in an office building. The people in the building were complaining about flu-like symptoms. Investigation of the roof found a pigeon nest in the fresh air intake. Testing of the pigeon droppings and feathers were positive for the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Reported the problem to the building owner and they cleaned it up. There were no more flu-like symptoms in the building after the cleanup.
The fungus may affect the eye by causing small areas of inflammation. It also scars the retina. A Physician friend of mine told me that these spots are sometime called “histo spots” and can be found in both eyes. It can also affect your vision depending upon the location of the “histo spots”. The scarring of the peripheral area of the retina could possibly have little or no impact on the vision. If you are scared in the central area, it could possibily cause a blind spot. This can be diagnosed by a Ophthalmologist who is familiar with Histoplasmosis.
The sign of ocular histoplasmosis in your child could be distorted vision, blind spots and scars on the retina. It is detected with a dilated examination of the retina using ophthalmoscopy. Regular eye exams is recommended for anyone with “histo spots”. The best solution we can offer is to keep your children away from pigeons and their droppings at the beach and park areas. Prevention is the best solution for Histoplasma.

If you have an Milk Allergy then you suffer from allergies Type 1 what is also called Contact Allergies. When milk products are consumed the immune systems treats the proteins found in milk as harmful or dangerous to the body and overreacts to the perceived invasion by producing antibodies to attack the proteins.
Scientist are unsure as to why some proteins found in foods are consider harmful or dangerous by the immune system. What is known is that antibodies and histamine released into the blood stream during an allergic attack can cause wheezing, nausea, headaches stomach cramps, and hives.
Like most type 1 allergic attacks the onset of symptoms usually occur within a couple of minutes to a couple of hours after eating something containing milk or milk byproducts. Lactose intolerance and being allergic to milk are often mistaken because some of the symptoms are the same for both conditions.
Lactose intolerance involves the digestive system instead of the immune system. The digestive system in lactose intolerant individuals does not produce enough of the enzyme needed to break down the sugar found in milk thus producing symptoms similar to an allergic attack.
Prior to seeing any allergy specialist for testing on milk allergies you will need to stop taking any anti-allergy medication or over the counter antihistamines 2 to 3 days before the test are to be performed. Talk to the allergy specialist if you are unsure about any medications that need to be stopped and for how long.
The allergic to milk testing involves putting a liquid extract of the milk protein on your body, usually the back or forearm, and then scratching the skin slightly. If you develop hives, or red bumps, or the skin turns reddish in color and itches then these symptoms could indicate a positive result for allergies to milk.
Avoidance can be very difficult because milk protein is often hidden in other foods. Milk, ice cream, and cheese obviously need to be avoided. Most baked goods such as breads and muffins use large qualities of milk in the baking process. Soy Cheeses may be milk free but they could contain milk protein and should be avoided. Other foods such as chocolate, processed meats may also contain milk or milk byproducts. Read the labels of every food item that you bring into your home. Because the manufacturing processes change continuously re-read the labels each time you purchase a product.
Avoiding milk and other allergy causing ingredients was made easier after the new laws for manufacturing labeling went into effect on January 2006. All labels should be designed in such a way that a 7-year-old child could read and understand the ingredients.
A growing awareness about food allergies is becoming well known in the United States. Food manufactures and restaurants are becoming more understanding and willing to accommodate people living with food allergies. Living with a Milk Allergy is no longer a major undertaking; it is now just a minor adjustment to your life-style.
Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with treating the allergy symptoms such as Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, and Quercitin.
Vitamin E accelerates wound healing and aids in the functioning of the immune system. Vitamin E can be taken internally or applied as a lotion to the affected areas of the skin.
Aloe Vera will help rejuvenate and tone skin all over. A naturally cooling gel, the Aloe Vera botanical ingredients work together to stimulate the blood circulation and naturally soften the skin.
Quercitin is a well-known flavonoid. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and can reduce inflammation boost the immune system and strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation. Quercitin is also known for its ability to block the release of histamines, thus reducing or preventing allergy symptoms.

If you have an Chocolate Allergy then you suffer from Allergies Type 1, also called Contact Allergies. Scientists do not clearly understand why the immune system of people allergic to chocolate considers some food proteins as harmful by the body.
The immune system can mount a variety of defenses mechanisms against proteins that is considers as harmful or foreign. Symptoms can be very mild to life-threatening depending on the severity of your chocolate allergies. They usually occur within a few minutes to a few hours after eating or inhaling chocolate.
True allergies to chocolate or cocoa are very rare. Other ingredients, additives or chemicals found in processed chocolate such as nuts, milk, gluten from wheat, soybeans, corn, syrup, caffeine, Theo-bromine, and Phenyl-ethylamine, cause most allergic reactions to chocolate. The higher the quality of chocolate the lower the chances of other additives being found in chocolate.
Cocoa is made from the seeds of the cocoa tree that have been fermented, roasted and then ground up. The cocoa tree originated in Central America but is now grown in tropical climates around the world.
The proteins found in chocolate trigger the immune system to reaction. Antibodies and histamines are releases into the blood stream in an attempt to neutralize the chocolate protein. These chemicals trigger the allergic symptoms. In sever cases Epinephrine, also call Adrenaline, is administered to control the anaphylaxis reaction.
If you are unsure if you are allergic to chocolates then one of the tests you could be given is called Food Challenge Test. Avoid all chocolates for several weeks. The doctor will then give you pure chocolate without any of the other ingredients usually found in processed chocolate. This test needs to be given under close supervision by an allergist. If you are truly allergic to chocolate a violent reactions may occur and emergency medical attention may be needed. If symptoms appear within two hours after the taking the pill then you are allergic to it and will need to avoid it.
Avoidance can be very difficult because cocoa is often hidden in other foods. Read the labels of every food that you bring into your home. Because the manufacturing processes change continuously re-read the labels each time you purchase a product. On January 1, 2006 a new law was passed stating that all labels should be designed in such a way that a 7-year-old child could read and understand the ingredients.
Some of the health benefits of eating chocolate, in moderation of course, are reducing the risk of hart disease, increase longevity, increases libido and increased sexual fulfillment. Antioxidants are also found in chocolate and are believed to lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream. Just because it tastes good does not mean that it is bad for you so enjoy the occasional teat, you deserve it.
Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with Allergies such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Pantothenic Acid, Glucosamine, Antioxidants, Allergy Aid, and Quercitin.
Vitamin A is a known antioxidant and can assist the human body in the healing process. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.
Up to one-third of older people can no longer absorb Vitamin B from their food. Vitamin B is needed to form red blood cells and keep nerves healthy.
Vitamin C is nature’s protective nutrient, essential for defending the body against pollution and infection and enhances the bodies immune system.
Beta Carotene protects the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs. It also helps protect Vitamin C from oxidation, which enables it to perform at optimum efficiency.
Vitamin E protects the lung tissue from inhaled pollutants and aids in the functioning of the immune system.
Many find Pantothenic Acid to be very helpful against allergy symptoms. It is another form of nontoxic B vitamins. Pantothenic Acid is critical in the metabolism and synthesis of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
Glucosamine is an anti-inflammatory and may give some relief from allergy symptoms.
Substances called antioxidants can neutralize free radical by pairing up or binding with the free radical elections thus inhibiting them from damaging cells in the human body.
Allergy Aid supplies 9 beneficial Herb’s to help provide temporary relief of respiratory allergies. The natural action of these specific Herb’s help to open bronchial tubes and ease breathing.
Quercitin is a well known flavonoid. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and can reduce inflammation boost the immune system and strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation. Quercitin is also known for its ability to block the release of histamines, thus reducing or preventing Chocolate Allergy symptoms.

Most people find that they are allergic to something. It might be poison ivy. It might be a certain type of medication. But by far the hardest to control are food allergies. You have to be very diligent in what you eat and buy. You never know when a potential allergen could be in a meal and this could lead to some very serious medical problems if you are seriously allergic. Child food allergies are especially hard to deal with because children do not often understand why they cannot always eat the same foods that their friends eat. You have to ensure that they are educated and know what to look for on packaging information as well as having the ability to communicate these allergies to adults that are supervising them. This article will not cure your child’s food allergies but it may give you some information about allergies and what you can do on your part.
Can child food allergies be dangerous?
Yes, child food allergies can be very dangerous. Most reactions are fairly mild and may only involve some upset stomach symptoms. But other reactions can cause the throat to swell or even cause the child to go into shock. That is why it is extremely important to know exactly what your child is allergic to so you can prevent them from coming into contact with or eating that particular food. If the allergy is severe enough your child may have to keep an Epi-Pen with him or her at all times just in case they do ingest something they are allergic too. An Epi-Pen is a dose of epinephrine that acts as a stimulant to the body.
How do I handle child food allergies if my child eats at school?
Handling child food allergies for children that eat lunch or breakfast at their school can be difficult. You really have no control about what they eat and what the lunches contain. You can try sending a letter from your doctor stating the allergies your child has and hope that the school carefully monitors the food that is given to your child. The best alternative though is to send food with your child. That way you can control what the food has in it, what it has come into contact with and prevent any mishaps that may occur if your child is not old enough to pay attention to what is being served.
How can I make my child understand his or her child food allergies?
Child food allergies can be difficult for a parent or adult to understand let alone a child. But educating your child is the best thing you can do. They may have lots of questions about why other kids can eat certain things but they cannot. If they are very young these questions may not surface immediately but you can begin preparing them by explaining why certain foods are harmful to certain people. They may not understand it at first but overtime it will sink in. There are probably going to be times when your child does have an allergic reaction. They will begin to associate this with what you are saying and then begin taking it upon themselves to make sure they are careful about what they eat.
What should I do if my child has an allergic reaction?
The most important thing you can do if your child has an allergic reaction is to remain calm. You need to be calm so that they are. The symptoms could be frightening. The mildest symptoms are runny noses, upset stomachs and maybe even hives. The more serious reactions could lead to swelling of the throat, tongue and mouth. If your child is having a severe allergic reaction you have to seek medical attention immediately. If the allergy is severe enough to warrant a prescription of an Epi-Pen you will need to administer the dose and then get your child to the emergency room or call 911.

Parents whose children are diagnosed with a food allergy often feel confused, utterly alone and dismayed. They understand that the road ahead could be long and require a lot of lifestyle modifications. The good news is that there are many avenues for getting food allergy help, including emergency room staff, Epi-Pen makers, ambulance drivers, CPR instructors and nurses ready to spring to action in the event of serious allergic reactions. As well, there are doctors, researchers and allergists working on long-term therapies.
When an acute emergency situation occurs, parents of kids with food allergies must get help immediately. First, parents must recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock, such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, light-headedness, confusion, rapid swelling, hives, blue skin, severe abdominal pain, severe nausea and/or diarrhea. Shellfish and peanut allergies usually have the most severe reactions. Second, parents must call 9-1-1 or drive their child to the hospital immediately, phoning to let them know they’re coming so special support can be set up in advance. Patients whose doctors have identified them as high-risk candidates for anaphylactic shock often provide them with an Epi-Pen, which will deliver a dose of epinephrine/adrenalin to save a person who has lost consciousness. Lastly, parents must know how to administer CPR in the event that their child loses consciousness or stops breathing.
Of course, many parents want their children to be cured of this awful ailment once and for all. Some parents enroll their children in clinical trials to get food allergy help. During these trials, the children will be given a small amount of allergen, either with a pinprick, orally or beneath their tongue, and their reaction is monitored and treated by the doctor, as necessary. Every few weeks, the child will come back and take a slightly higher dose until the body develops a better tolerance to the protein. At first the experience can be stressful — both for parents and children — since so much energy and effort go into typically avoiding these situations. However, this technique has worked for some children with egg, peanut and milk allergies.
If you would like more comprehensive food allergy help, you can find local resources through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (www.foodallergy.org) or the Food Allergy Initiative (www.foodallergyinitiative.org). Here you will find support groups, food-related allergy recipes, activism events, research updates, literature downloads and methods for coping with allergy symptoms at home, school and restaurants. Child food allergies have increased 18% over the past decade. New parents need to be aware of the possibility that their children may have some sort of food allergy and know how to react in the event of an emergency. The top foods to watch out for include milk, egg, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts, almonds, fish, tuna, salmon, cod, shrimp, lobster, crab, soy and wheat. Most kids will outgrow an allergy to soy or wheat by the time they go to school. Almost half of infants with a milk or egg allergy will outgrow them by age 10. Often shellfish and peanut allergies are for life — and they are also the most dangerous.
Food allergy symptoms may show up a few minutes after your baby has eaten or even a few hours later. If you’re introducing news foods, you should be on the look out for hives, flushed skin, rashes, face swelling, tongue swelling, lip swelling, vomiting, colic, diarrhea, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing or unconsciousness. If your baby’s allergic reaction causes severe sickness, swelling or difficult breathing, do not hesitate to call 911 to get paramedics on the scene at once. It may sound strange, but babies can react to a food even if they’ve eaten that food in the past.
The best way to cope with serious food allergies is to keep your infant away from their food trigger. Make sure babysitters, relatives, daycare workers and school officials know about their food allergy and subsequent reaction. Breastfeeding offers good protection against allergies, so it’s best to breastfeed as long as you can. When your child is old enough to understand, try reading books to him or her about asking before eating, coping with teasing from other kids and staying safe. Most communities offer resources for parents to communicate with their kids and caregivers about this topic.
At about nine or ten months, parents like to start moving their babies away from a diet consisting solely of baby food. Pediatric food allergies can be a scary thing for parents, so they sometimes hold off on introducing certain foods. Even if there is no added food allergy risk, it is easier to manage older babies with allergies. Allergy reactions are the worst for peanuts and shellfish, so many pediatricians recommend waiting until your child is at least three years old to introduce these things. Whole cow’s milk should not be given to babies under a year of age because the proteins are too complex for the baby’s stomach to digest. However, yogurt and soft cheeses are a subtler way to introduce dairy, as these products are broken down. Honey is another substance doctors recommend holding off of on (until age 1 or 2) because it may cause a disease called infant botulism.

America has gotten a bit obsessed with the idea of food allergies in children over the past few decades. The Centers for Disease Control announced that food allergies and incidents of food intolerance have spiked 18% in the last decade, yet many scientists believe their traditional methods for detecting a child’s food allergy, like blood tests and prick skin tests, are unreliable. The best method for some patients is to spend the time, money and effort on gradually overcoming a food allergy through a process of gradual tolerance. In this article, you will learn more about and the various testing methods you may consider for your child’s food allergy symptoms.
Currently, there are two preliminary tests for food allergies in kids. After going over the child’s and family’s medical history, a basic physical examination and asking questions about the child’s diet, pediatricians generally recommend a blood test. Even though this is not 100% predictive, many allergies can be ruled out this way. During this test, a small amount of blood will be drawn and observed for the presence of IgE antibody, which will reveal an immune system response to a particular food protein. For people with extreme shellfish or peanut allergies, this test is preferred because the patient does not have to be exposed to the potential allergens. During the 30-minute prick skin test, a tiny amount of solution containing a suspected allergen is placed on the skin, which is then pricked to let the solution get below the surface. If there is an allergic reaction, such as itchiness or a bump, then it’s likely there is a food allergy.
The prevailing theory is that food allergies in children can be overcome with a gradual Food Challenge test. There are three types of Food Challenges used today. During an Open Food Challenge, both the patient and the medical staff are aware that the patient is eating the suspected allergy-trigger. A child in an open egg allergy test may be given small (but increasing) doses of scrambled eggs every 15-30 minutes until a whole egg is ingested to test his threshold. In a Single-Blind Placebo-Controlled Food Challenge, the medical staff is aware what the patient is being fed, but the patient is not. This type of test is helpful when a patient expresses extreme anxiety about ingesting the food. A child may be given a small amount of egg concealed in pudding, for instance, until a whole egg can be ingested. A Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Food Challenge occurs when neither child nor medical staff (aside from one doctor not directly involved) knows what the patient is being fed. This ensures that there are no emotional biases or stress-related reactions.
Despite the success of the Food Challenge when it comes to food allergies in children, many anxious parents do not want to go through the process. It seems counterintuitive to ask children to eat something that is known to be harmful to them. However, there are many reasons to go through with the test as well. First, blood test results and skin test results are not very accurate. Another reason to perform a Food Challenge is to see if the allergy has been outgrown. Lastly, a Food Challenge can pinpoint the precise food causing the kid food allergy. Elimination diets can take much longer to yield results. Documenting the degree of sensitivity to the food is the most precise way to uncover the child’s tolerance level.
